Karpagambal Mess

My housemates and I stumbled on Karpagambal Mess, one of the restaurants serving the faithful who visit Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore. The place opened in 1953, and feels a bit like a temple itself with its paintings of gods and goddesses and devotional music in the background. All a little grainy and dim under the flourescent lighting, as if we had entered the wayback machine for classic South Indian diners.

Two friendly women sitting across from us helped us to order dosai, a lemony noodle thing and more from the menu, which was only in Tamil.  We were thankful. Dinner was served on banana leaves and servers dolloped out the chutney and sambar with abandon.
