Murthy Megaven, a Kovalam fisherman, is a local legend. He learned to surf on wooden planks before he could afford a surfboard. Today, he is an international competitor. He also runs the Covelong Point Surf School, an hour south of Chennai, where kids from his fishing village learn the sport along with life lessons. Surfers come from around the world to stay at the school, which includes an inn and restaurant overlooking the Bay of Bengal. Profits go to the village. It's a joyful place! And the swimming is lovely as well. I plunged in during a visit last weekend, alongside surfers, boogie-boarding kids, kayakers and a kite surfer who practically disappeared from the horizon before gliding back to shore.

Just north of Kovalam's surfing beach, fisherfolk keep their boats and sell their catch. It's always an event.

Seafood dredged in neon marsala for sale, including baby crabs to munch shell and all. |
The color of that marsala is amazing - and perhaps you'll stay and become a surfer girl...
